Crispy Seitan Bites

Ridiculously quick and easy vegan chicken alternative! With 36 grams of protein per serving, these crispy SEITAN bites can be added to any recipe, and flavoured any way you like.

Ingredients

This recipe requires only 8 main ingredients! Here is everything you’ll need:

  • Vital wheat gluten flour — the main component of seitan. I used Bob’s Red Mill brand.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Vegetable broth powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt & black pepper — or whichever seasonings you have on hand and would like to add!

How to Make

Boil Water

Place a steamer basket over a saucepan with 1-2 inches of water. Bring it to a boil while you make the setain dough.

Make the Dough

Next, combine all dry ingredients together in a bowl. Then mix in water and form a thick, stretchy dough.

Cook Seitan Bites

Break off small bite-sized pieces of dough and place inside the greased steamer basket. Cover the pot and let steam for 10 minutes.

While steaming, heat a frying pan over medium-high. Once done steaming, transfer the seitan pieces to the pan to crisp up. Let the seitan bites fry for around 5 minutes, flipping as needed so that all sides become browned.

Ready to Serve!

Once crispy, the seitan bites are ready to be served or added to other recipes as a chicken alternative! I recommend tossing in sweet Thai chili sauce, curry sauce, BBQ sauce, or try one of my other recipes:

Customizations

Feel free to switch out any of the spices and seasonings in this recipe! For example, you could add oregano and basil to make it taste more herby, or chili powder and cayenne pepper for a kick.

This version of the recipe is supposed to be the most basic for versatility. It can replace chicken in any dish!

Storage

These seitan bites are amazing for meal prep because they last up to 5 days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer! You can easily make a double or triple batch if you plan to eat them throughout the week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to make this recipe gluten-free?

Unfortunately vital wheat gluten flour is the main component of this recipe, and therefore cannot be made gluten-free.

Can this recipe be made in advance of serving?

Absolutely! I recommend reheating in a pan for best texture.

Does seitan taste like chicken?

Yes and no. Seitan definitely has the appearance of chicken, but flavour depends on how it is seasoned, sauced, and implemented into other dishes. Without seasoning, seitan does not have strong flavour, and acts more as a base —similar to tofu!
